He was with Crew K90, assigned to 337th Bomb Squadron, 96 Bomb Group. They were a new crew on the Dottie J III when it was shot down. Thank you for the photo. I have to get that book.
This is from Coffey's book "Decision Over Schweinfurt" . The 1st and 3rd Divisions flew pretty much the same route most of the way in and back. The 94th flew with the third division although they were off course here and there. I hope Mr. Coffey does not mind me posting this page from his book. What group was Lt. Bye in??
If you click on Marc's name you can see all postings by him. He has indicated this is the 94th BG navigational chart. There i a second page to this posting on his page. Mary, you can also send him a message to request more info.
Thank you. I am working with a member of Lt. Bye's crew that was shot down in the Dottie J III to record his personal military history. This is very descriptive information that would go along with all the details he has told me about that day. My client doesn't remember a whole lot about traveling to the site, but he definitely remembers a lot about hitting the target and battling the enemy fighters in waves, 3 and 4, at a time until he was on the ground. His journey after that is as vivid as if it happened in 1980.
I didnt post this originally, but I'm guessing the write up comes from a Lead crew on the 14th Oct 43 mission to Schweinfurt. Top of pages I cannot read, to see which aircraft, which group, this relates to. Ian W.
