Thank you so much, it arrived yesterday (5/28). I am mesmerized. My father was haunted by the thought that in shooting down attacking German fighters that he had taken lives. As his health failed he kept wondering if he would be forgiven. In his final days he kept pointing skyward and saying "here they come" I am convinced he was still reliving the battle.....
Thanks Candy, I will accept a copy of your book on behalf of SSMA. Address is below. Thanks for forwarding our site to the granddaughter that you mentioned. I will be on the lookout for her membership request. Thank goodness for these networks that enable us to exchange information. We, as the sons and daughters, must now put maximum effort into finding the grandchildren who will carry on the legacy our fathers left to us. Do you attend the Geneseo air show?
Thanks Candy, I did check out your book on Amazon and it is on my "to read" list for the summer. There are so many of the NEXGEN out there that never knew what their father went through as a POW. As a result of the Schweinfurt raid we had airmen scattered amongst many POW camps so part of my mission is to educate myself both to all related subject matter and identify those out there who have completed research on specific topics. Yo are now on my list of contacts for your area of expertise.
I would much rather purchase the book from you than Amazon so if you let me know the cost + shipping I will send a check out to you.
Hi Candy, Welcome to the SSMA network. I am so happy to have you here.. and you don't live that far from me. I live close to State College, PA. When I saw the name of your town in New York I just knew it was closer to central PA than NYC. I also read about the book you wrote to honor your father. Now I must buy it to read. We have another author on our site - Marilyn Walton whose father was in Stalag III. She also wrote about his adventures and organized a recreation liberation walk with other Kreigies. She spoke here at Penn State last summer and her presentation is in the videos on our site.
My father was seriously wounded 10/14/43 on the Schweinfurt raid. His plane barely made it back. The pilot, John Noack, is the only crew member remaining. They were shot down in early December of 1943 and John found himself in Stalag I. He is a very special person to me as you can imagine. He is very active in the organization and is good on the computer.
