Hello all. The lesser discussed but equally important third and fourth missions to Schweinfurt, were flown by the 8th in 1944. On 24th February and later that year, 9th October 1944. All four missions concentrated on the all important centre of steel bearing production, vital to the German war machine in so many ways. It was like so many targets throughout occupied Europe, still heavily defended. the difference in the later two missions, was the substantially increased of air power and the weight of friendly ''little friends'' fighter escorts, which gave protection against the gradually dwindling German Luftwaffe. So, its important that while we always recognise and remember the tragedies of 1943, this target still commanded the attention of the USAAF, and the RAF by night.
