  • Thanks for the link, Sue.  I've spent a fair bit of the last 24 hours reviewing various writings abour that momentous day, including Ike's speech.  My reasons are several, as I am sure they are for most of us.  There are 2 particularly personal reasons.  The man who is the godfather for all 3 of my siblings has his older brother burried in Plot F, Row 21, Grave 14 at the Normandy American Cemetary in Colleville-sur-Mer, France.  Staff Sergeant Harry McAleavey landed at Utah beach on June 6, 1944 with the U.S. Army's 8th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division.  On the 10th day of June 1944 he made the Supreme Sacrafice in service to our nation.  One of our former neighbors and a dear friend's father, Screaming Eagle Boyd, Pittsburgh, PA, stood with Ike just before boarding a C47with his colleagues of the 101st Airborne, as they prepared to depart for their drop into Normandy in the early morning hours of June 6, 1944.  The reflections provoked by these personal links to such extraordinary acts of selflessness and heroism always especially enrich the early days of June for me.  Thank you for the link and discussion according another opportunity to speak of their deeds and those of their colleagues at a time in world history when freedom was so clearly much at risk.
